FORNO Counter-Depth Refrigerators: Which One Should You Buy?

FORNO Counter-Depth Refrigerators: Which One Should You Buy?

FORNO makes four counter-depth refrigerators that suit most kitchens. The right one mostly comes down to your opening width, whether you want ice, and how much electrical work you're willing to do.

The quick answer

Most kitchens: Moena 36". Freestanding, 19.2 cu. ft., built-in ice maker, standard outlet.

A 60" built-in wall: Maderno 60". 27.2 cu. ft. in two convertible units with a trim kit. Needs a platform base and two circuits.

A roughly 47" opening, no platform: Custodia 46.8". Freestanding pair, 20.6 cu. ft., smaller ice maker.

Compact or budget-led: Salerno 33". 15.62 cu. ft., no ice maker, easiest fit in a tight space.

Counter-depth vs standard-depth: what the label means

A counter-depth refrigerator has a shallower cabinet so it sits close to flush with your base cabinets, which keeps sight lines clean and walkways open. The usual trade-off is less capacity than a standard-depth fridge of the same width.

On these FORNO models the cabinet is 24" deep for the Moena, 24.1" for the Maderno, 21.42" for the Salerno and 20.4" for the Custodia. The doors and handles then add roughly 5 to 6.5 inches in front of the cabinet, so the fridge will still stand slightly proud of the counter edge. Always measure from the wall to the front of your nearest counter and compare that with the depth including handles on the product page.

Best all-rounder

FORNO Moena 36" (FFRBI1820-36)

FORNO Moena 36 inch counter-depth French door refrigerator in a modern kitchen

The FORNO Moena 36" French door refrigerator is the best fit for most kitchens: a freestanding counter-depth fridge with an ice maker that plugs into a standard outlet. It comes in stainless steel, black and white (the model number's suffix changes with the finish).

  • Capacity: 12.1 cu. ft. fresh food and 7.1 cu. ft. freezer.
  • Size: 36" W x 70.1" H x 30.41" D with handles. The cabinet itself is 24" deep, so only the doors and handles stand proud of standard counters.
  • Ice: built-in ice maker making up to 4 lbs of cubed ice per day. There is no water dispenser in the door.
  • Storage: 3 glass shelves (2 adjustable), 2 crisper drawers, 4 door bins and 2 gallon-size bins.
  • Handles: antique brass and stainless steel handles both ship in the box, so you choose the look at install.
  • Power and noise: 115V on a 15A circuit with an 8 ft cord included, ENERGY STAR certified, about 41 dBA.
  • Warranty: 2 years parts and labor.

Who it suits: families replacing a standard-depth fridge in a 36" opening who want a cleaner line without paying for a built-in. If you want a water dispenser in the door, look elsewhere in the range.

Fit notes: plan a 37" W x 71.08" H cutout, and leave at least 1" above, 3" behind and 0.5" on each side. With the door open 90 degrees the fridge reaches 44.37" into the room, so check walkways and island clearances.

  • Capacity: two 13.6 cu. ft. units. Each unit is convertible, so you can run either side as a refrigerator or a freezer.
  • Fit: plan a cutout of 55.9" W x 28.94" D x 69.06" H. The cabinet is 24.1" deep, with 29.7" overall depth including handles.
  • Storage: six glass shelves and six removable drawers across the two units, with electronic controls and a door-ajar alarm.
  • No ice maker or water dispenser. If you want ice, pair it with a separate built-in ice maker.
  • Power: each unit has its own cord and needs its own dedicated 15A circuit.
  • Efficiency and warranty: ENERGY STAR certified, 2 years parts and labor.

Who it suits: remodels with a 60" opening and a designer-style kitchen, or households that want flexible fridge-versus-freezer space.

Plan before delivery: a built platform base is required, and it must extend fully past the cabinet opening or the lower trim kit cannot be fitted. Build the platform and surround first, and have an electrician confirm both circuits.

The Moena is the only model here with a full-size ice maker and a standard single outlet; the Maderno is the only built-in. Specs are from each product page.

How to choose: a six-step checklist

1
Measure the opening three ways. Record width, height and depth to the back wall, then compare them with the cutout and clearance figures on the product page. Top, back and side gaps are listed per model, for example 1" top, 3" back and 0.5" each side for the Moena.
2
Count the full depth, not just the cabinet. Counter-depth refers to the cabinet only. The Moena is 24" deep without doors but 30.41" with handles, so measure from the wall to the front of the nearest counter and add that.
3
Check the door swing. Depth with the door open 90 degrees is 40.19" for the Salerno, 44.37" for the Moena, 45" for the Custodia and 52.64" for the Maderno. Make sure the open door doesn't block an island or walkway.
4
Decide how much ice you need. The Moena makes up to 4 lbs per day and the Custodia up to 1.76 lbs. The Salerno and Maderno have no ice maker, and none of the four has a water dispenser.
5
Confirm power. The Moena and Salerno need one outlet each. The Custodia needs two outlets and the Maderno two dedicated 15A circuits, which an electrician should check before delivery.
6
Pick the finish and handles. All four are offered in stainless steel, black and white, and the Moena and Salerno ship with both brass and stainless steel handles.

Delivery and returns: FORNO delivery to the room of your choice is included, with up to 7 steps, but installation and haul-away are not. Read the shipping policy and return policy before ordering, since returns must be requested within 30 days of delivery and for unused, uninstalled units.
